QCQ for Blackfishing

Quotation (with page number or parag number or time stamp if video/audio)

“Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande, both of women whom were named in Thompson’s blackfishing list, demonstrate switching standards of beauty, which has recently included having a big butt, large breasts, plump lips, and tanned skin, traits popularized by the celebrities in question but traditionally associated with black women” pg. 6

Comment (250-500 words)

I partially agree with this quote about celebrities who have changed, and shifted the “look” of a beautiful woman in today’s society. These women have used social media to flaunt, and sexualize their bodies for views, likes, and eventually roches. It’s caused women all over the world to change their own looks, for the most part through surgery to reach and unreachable body that only exists in the most rich and famous women on the planet. In turn, middle class women have made millions from flaunting their own bodies on social media and gaining views, likes, and follows because of it. It’s caused the Brazilian butt lift to become a common surgery, and breast implants to become a step in the right direction to reach this aesthetic. This has made women who are thinner, yet completely healthy become insecure about their bodies. Yes, I agree that the two women listed by Thompson have changed their bodies in order to fit the bill, but not all of the most famous women in society look this way. These women who have become famous for their rounded, curvy bodies are not the only women that are considered beautiful in the media. The most popular woman in the media that I could think of today is Zendaya, who does not have these characteristics yet society is always talking about and appreciating her natural beauty. Not only this but society has made a major change in the right direction to appreciate people of all shapes, sizes, and colors and to lay claim that no one’s body should be shamed for how it looks.

Question

Would today’s society have the outlook on beauty it has now if these women of white descent didn’t promote the normal aesthetic of a black woman?
