QCQ is short for “Quotation-Comment-Question.” It begins with a Quotation of 1-3 sentences. It then has a Comment. And it then asks a Question that encourages engagement from others. A good QCQ gives you something to bring to the table and offers something worth discussing in class. Earn full credit (1000 points) for a QCQ that touches all 3 bases – and is in on time.

QCQ for Facebook Readings

Quotation (with page number or parag number or time stamp if video/audio)

“While the headline in the internal slide does not explicitly state it, the research shows one in three of those teenage girls who told us they were experiencing body image issues reported that using Instagram made them feel worse — not one in three of all teenage girls.”

Comment (250-500 words)

I chose this quote because I think there are several different ideals that can be found from it. On one end, there is the informational portion of the data alone, and on the other you can see the effort by both the Wall Street Journal and Facebook/Instagram to skew it in their own ways to fit their own arguments. Personally, I agree with the Wall Street Journal when they say it affects one in three girls who deal with issues of body image but I would like it to be truly backed by data with a larger amount of test subjects. Facebook/Instagram on the other hand has taken their data, and claimed that this is only about forty girls specifically, when in fact the company is likely going to use the data from these forty teenage girls to correct, modify, or rearrange their app. There is not a single place on the slide deck where the surveyors claim how many people are a part of the survey. On both sides, these groups are using data from small sample sizes to create their own narrative for their own company’s liking. As a person who believes in science and math, I believe this should be a survey that reaches different cultures, areas, and groups at a larger scale in order for the data to be truly credible. A survey of one to ten thousand people from each walk of life would make the survey more informative as opposed to trying to scale a small group of people to the world. Of course this is very difficult but in order to get realistic results it would need to be done.

Question

Regarding Instagram for kids, what changes would the app make to try and prevent the issues discussed in the slide deck?
